TOWN OF MANSFIELD
Traffic Authority
Minutes of the Meeting – January 8, 2009
Present: Hart, Hultgren, Padick, Meitzler, Jackman
Speed limits on new Town Roads – the spreadsheet of Town Road speed limits still needs to be updated. Hultgren will work with Chaine to accomplish this.
89/195 Intersection concerns – both the Church exit sign question and the pedestrian safety concern are pending with the DOT.
Advance green request on 32 at 275 – still pending with DOT.
Walk left sign request for Hunting Lodge Road, South Eagleville Road, Hanks Hill Road – Hultgren brought up a joint Town/University effort to publicize pedestrian safety and walking on the correct side of the street to the University Parking Advisory Committee at its last meeting. He learned that UConn has a pedestrian safety committee that is planning a similar program with Officer Averna of the UConn PD as its chairperson. Hultgren has contacted Ms. Averna to arrange a joint meeting to try to coordinate the Town and University efforts.
Centerline stripe Flaherty Road – no progress; more research needs to be done on this.
Hunting Lodge Road speeds near Goodwin School – Hultgren requested the accident data from DOT and there were no accidents reported in this area. He also wrote to the DOT Highway safety office to see if any additional grant funds were available to purchase a fixed radar speed sign for the road in front of the school. Meitzler surveyed the school zone signage and found that there was no (optional) advance warning sign for the school zone (Southbound). Members felt that the advance warning sign place back towards the crest of the vertical curve to the north of the school would be helpful in warning drivers of the need to drive slower on this stretch. Hultgren will write Mr. Hossack to explain the Authority’s deliberations and decisions.
Storrs Road modifications in the Storrs Center area – as a meeting to review the latest proposal was held on Jan 7th and a further revision was expected for the Authority to review, no further review was held. Jackman reiterated his need for 20 feet of clear width for emergency vehicles, and that curbs and islands should be mountable through the reach.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 11:00 AM.
