2007 Spanish Mariposa Project
Second, Third and Fourth Grade students at Southeast are involved in an online project offered by a distinguished educational website known as “Journey North.” Our students, (along with over 50,000 other students from across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico) have made paper butterflies to which they have attached notes which will be received by Mexican students. The notes ask our southern neighbors to protect the paper butterfly as they should the real butterflies when they soon arrive in their part of the world. The paper butterflies embark on their trip to Mexico just as the journey begins for the real monarch butterflies. In the spring, when the real monarchs return to us, the Mexican students will return our paper butterflies with notes reminding us it is again our turn to do what we can to make our environment a safe place for this beautiful natural resource.
