Welcome to the wonderful world of Family and
Consumer Sciences!!!! Egad you say, "What is that?" Well, let me
help to explain. When you enter room 214, you will be assaulted by many
visual images ranging from cartoons depicting food science situations, to
current statistics on the spread of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Why the
range? There is so much material to present to students in order to prepare
them for self-sufficiency and independence. I call it one stop shopping!
Family and Consumer Science education is all about
empowering students to become self-sufficient, contributing members of our
society. Due to the fact that FCS is inter-disciplinary by nature, math,
social studies, language arts, science and technology, all come together
here!!! The information our students learn will be used today, tomorrow and in
the future.

for 8th Graders

The
course work is divided by grade level and is consistent with a spiraling
curriculum model. In the fifth grade, students are studying food science,
bacteriology, food preparation techniques, and human growth and development.
In the
sixth grade, course work is devoted to learning how to use our computerized
sewing machines. After learning terminology, proper equipment identification
and usage, students will construct a pillow of their choice!
The
seventh grade curriculum focus is on consumer economics. Students will
explore units in consumer law, marketing, advertising, economics, human growth
and development, nutrition, independent living, and effective decision making
in the market place.
The eighth grade curriculum model rotates by
quarter. Topics may include nutritional science, food preparation, quilting, making a jointed teddy bear, flannel pants, or a
duffle bag. Advanced sewing would include deciphering commercial patterns.
