What's Going On in the Interest Center

                                                                                                Room 112

Room 112 is the location of the Humanities side of the MMS Enrichment program. Mr. Trembly and Ms. McCormick teach Reading, Literature, Language Arts, Social Studies, the arts, and  other areas of interest to classes, small groups and individuals in Grades 5-8 (Mr. Perkins teaches Enrichment Math, Science and Technology and is located in Room 202.).  There are various criteria for identification but it is our philosophy that any student with a passion for learning in a given area, and the willingness to work, will be given the opportunity to come to the Interest Center. All students (and parents) are invited to contact us to discuss this.

Special Projects Based on Student Interest

All MMS students are invited to come to the Interest Center to work on special projects during X-Block (We are closed on Thursdays). The project can be in any appropriate area of interest, and does not necessarily need to be school related, as long as it contains an academic component of some kind.

Students interested in doing special projects for academic credit need to develop a plan (the Enrichment Teachers will help), and have the plan approved by the subject teacher.

Upon approval it is sometimes possible for a certain amount of class time to be set aside for the student to work on the project, in the classroom or in the Interest Center, instead of doing certain regular classroom assignments.

                                                                        Other

The Interest Center is a place where any student can come for any academically related purpose. We host, coordinate, sponsor, or are some way involved with a great many activities. We teach individuals and small groups of students at all grade levels and in all subject areas. Other students come to the Interest Center to pursue interests that are not a part of our formal curriculum. All students are welcome in the Interest Center.

It is our hope that every student who spends four years at MMS will come to the Interest Center for at least one long-term project during his/her time here.

Please feel free to contact us at any time. 1 (860) 429-9341 x 112
