6th Grade Language Arts & Reading

Hello!  I am your child’s 6th grade Language Arts and Reading teacher.  Welcome to a new year at MMS!

About Me

I have been teaching for about eleven years starting in North Carolina and then in Mansfield when we moved here ten years ago.  I have two sons, Ben who is ten and Zach who is five.  You child will hear a lot about them throughout the school year!  I love to read, travel, and watch movies when I’m not at school.

My Teaching Philosophy

Writing is a process that takes time and practice.  I want to help your child realize the joy and power of writing!  Your child will have opportunities to write both assigned project pieces and to work on their own choice pieces.  We will also be looking at various editing and revising skills along with spelling patterns.

Reading is also a skill that takes time and practice.  We will be exploring many genres as a whole class, in Literature Circles, and with our own chosen books.  We will also be responding to reading using journals, written projects, discussions, and even drawing!

Please contact me if you have any questions about anything we are doing in class!  Email is the best way to get a hold of me and I will try to answer you within 24 hours.

Here’s to a great new year!

LA Homework

LA students will receive a spelling assignment most full weeks in school.  There is not one list – instead everyone is working at their own pace with their weekly five words based on a pre-test.  The assignment will be to write a sentence per word or a paragraph using all the words.  There will also be a test given on those same five words on the day the homework is due.  Words misspelled on the test will be added to the next list to be practiced again.

Look for the list of words Monday in plan books and they are always due Friday!

We are also currently reading Nutmeg nominated books to write a book review in class.  I have explained to the kids that they can count their home reading for Reading class as well and that they will have time during LA class to read.  The book should be read by November 12th to start writing the review!

Reading Homework

Reading students receive a reading ticket Friday and it is due the following Friday.

They need to record the number of minutes read each night and the total for the week should be at least 150 minutes.  The name(s) of book(s) read and the pages read should also be recorded.  Parents have to sign each ticket to verify that the amount of reading minutes is accurate.  Most families develop a system of some kind to help remember the ticket due dates – my son leaves his on the refrigerator near our family calendar.  This has worked for us so far!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
