  • Fiesta

The annual Fiesta organized by Goodwin's Spanish teacher Senora S., took place in the gaily decorated all-purpose room. The fun filled event began in the morning with the second and third graders and their teachers entertaining the first graders by singing and dramatizing a selection of songs learned from Spanish classes during the year. Senor Moraga, a native Chilean and professional singer who teaches Spanish at Southeast and Vinton Schools, accompanied the children on his guitar. The second grade classes had lots of fun breaking open the beautiful pinatas made by Senora Silander's Spanish class at E. O. Smith High School. The children were able to swing their bats hard and fast because Senora S. wore a catcher's mask and chest protector this year! Muchas gracias go to all the parents and teachers who helped!

  • Water Slide Day

For over 20 years, our Physical Education teacher Mr. Dean has offered a giant slip and slide for our students, parents and families. Two separate 100 foot pieces of plastic are placed on a hillside behind Goodwin with water provided by the local volunteer fire department. Students take turns sliding down the hill in the stream of water. Several parent volunteers and staff help with the organization and safety.

  • Jazz Alive

Goodwin was entertained by the body-grooving, toe tapping sounds of Jazz Alive. The five talented musicians taught our children about the roots of jazz and gave them an appreciation for the jazz style of music. The teachers didn't do so badly at singing the "Saints" either!

  • Circus Day

Mrs. Pagoni's 2nd graders and Ms. Toffenetti's 4th graders got together for a joint performance adventure. The concept was a circus, an extravaganza of loud circus music, silly acts and ridiculous jokes. It was a great way to entertain their fellow students who were suffering from the "School's Not Over Yet Blues."

The circus was the brainchild of Ms. Toffenetti. She's done similar performances before but this was the first time she attempted it with children over the age of 7. It seemed a natural to hook her fourth graders up with their "Bear Buddies" in Mrs. Pagoni's class. The children of both classes had a chance to admire and enjoy each other's performing abilities as well as their willingness to make others laugh at their silly antics.

    Everyone had a wonderful time!

  • Kindergarten Celebrates Thanksgiving

Ms. Cavanaugh's and Mrs. Rucker's Kindergarten classes studied about the first Thanksgiving. They celebrated by preparing an authentic meal and having a feast. They dressed up in their Pilgrim and Native American costumes, which they made themselves. Everyone had a wonderful celebration.

  • Native American Visits Goodwin!

A Native American named Clint Chartier came to our school so we could learn about the Plains Indians. He showed us some weapons and clothes. He told us the difference between weapons and tools. Weapons are used to fight and tools are used to work. He showed us some real buffalo skins and showed us a real fox skin that Native Americans used to wear to kill the buffalo. He also showed us a spear and a bow and arrow! It was neat!

He came again to show us how to build a life size family size teepee and we got to go inside it. It had been a rainy day the first time he came. It was fun and we learned a lot. Thank you to the P.T.O. who arranged for him to come.

  • The Russians Have Come!

Six Russian teachers, Anna, Lena, Luda, Ludmila, Valentina, and Natalya came to our school on November 1. Mrs. Ullery went to Russia to visit them last February as part of an exchange program. They had a full tour of the school after seeing the Goodwin students perform in an assembly of American Songs of the 18th Century. They also attended our Presidential Election Pep Rally in the afternoon.

Before coming to our school, the six Russian teachers went to Boston. After, they went to New York. While they were here they went to the "Sound of Music" musical, the Mark Twain House, the mall and Old Sturbridge Village. Our visitors were amazed by the huge mall and plumbing.

Our Russian friends have small families. Some of them have only two children while others live alone. Russian children do not have a lot of things. They do have a lot of love and a lot of respect for teachers, parents and other adults.
