Endangered Species Project

Laura Toffenetti

4th Grade Teacher

My fourth grade class has been studying endangered species. We decided to do ABC books about the animals that are in danger due to loss of habitat, poaching, and pollution. We were amazed to find out that there are over 6,000 species listed as endangered. The students were very interested in the project and learned a lot about these different animals as well as the dangers they face.

Students used a variety of resources to research the animals. Each page had to include at least 4 facts about the animal, a map of where the animal lives and a picture. Some students set additional goals for themselves such as using that particular letter of the alphabet a number of times in a "silly sentence." Some students used little characters to introduce and/or comment on the animals. One student even made a book of riddles!

We spent some time learning about how to lay out a page in an effective way. We also had some mini drawing lessons to help capture the animals' likenesses. A few students were able to finish their books all by themselves. Most were able to share pages to finish off their books. All in all, the project took about a month to complete. It was a lot of fun and the students are very proud of their work. We wanted to share a "combined" ABC book made up of pages from each of their books. We hope you will enjoy the book and learn a bit about these endangered animals at the same time.
