Transferring genes from one animal to another. We've done this to prevent tomatoes from spoiling.

Protein synthesis: Or how to do make insulin, vaccines, interferon and other wonderful proteins in 5 minutes or less:

1) A plasmid from E. Coli is removed.

2) A restriction Enzyme,

a) cuts the DNA of the plasmid at the correct spot. (GAATTC)

b) also cuts out the wanted gene from the human

3) The gene and the plasmid are put together like pieces of a puzzle and they are glued with a ligase.

4) The recombinant plasmid is put back into the bacterial cell. See. Not all bacteria are bad.

5) As the bacterium reproduces millions of times, it copies the new gene too and the new protein is made.


Insulin, vaccines, and interferon have been made this way.


Gene Therapy can use similar technology to put good genes in humans with defective genes. Cystic Fibrosis, Hemophilia, Sickle Cell Anemia may be cured using this technology.
